Emotionally healthy life and self-care
Living an emotionally healthy life includes being intentional about self-care. This not only helps us keep a good balance in our lives but helps us at a physiological level, increasing the levels of serotonin (a neurotransmitter) in our brain.
FUNCTION OF SEROTONIN
When serotonin levels increase, we feel better – more content and happy. That is the function of serotonin – to pass on to the brain the message of contentment.
FIVE KEY SELF-CARE STEPS:
What are the key self-care steps we can take to naturally increase serotonin?
- To maximize serotonin you need sleep (7-9 hours per night).
- Healthy nutrition (limit the sugars and caffeine).
- Exercise (15-20 minutes per day of walking helps!).
- Sunlight (30 minutes a day). Use nonpolarized sunglasses only.
- Effective stress management.
Focus on these areas and you will be taking big steps towards functioning at your best!
