{"id":304,"date":"2021-08-24T14:27:12","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T14:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.feilcounselingandconsulting.com\/?p=304"},"modified":"2022-08-30T20:45:10","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T20:45:10","slug":"keys-to-resilient-effective-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.feilcounselingandconsulting.com\/index.php\/keys-to-resilient-effective-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"Keys to Resilient &#038; Effective Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">How can we as a church help keep missionaries &amp; global workers effectively serving in their areas of ministry without having to cut off their ministry service prematurely?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.feilcounselingandconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/D3E49A2D-A028-41C3-838A-CC0118C6FFF7.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-305\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\"><em>There are numerous challenges they need to overcome, and they will often need <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">our<\/span> help to serve the Lord effectively.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">WHAT ARE SOME OF THEIR KEY CHALLENGES?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;\">Attrition<\/span> &#8211; defined as workers having to leave the field of ministry and return home prematurely.  There are times this happens for <span style=\"font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;\">unpreventable<\/span> reasons, such as political upheaval, major health issues, children\u2019s needs, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\"> The bigger problem in this area is attrition for <span style=\"font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;\">preventable<\/span> reasons, such as faith crisis, team dysfunction, conflict with team members, marriage or family crisis, and even burnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A study on missionary attrition, published in the book <span style=\"font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;\">Too Valuable to Lose<\/span> <em>(Edited by William D. Taylor; William Carey Library, 1997)<\/em> highlighted several positive and negative factors missionaries will face.  Positive factors that help missionaries succeed in ministry include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Relational Skills<\/li><li>Strong sense of calling from the Lord<\/li><li>Flexibility<\/li><li>Work well with authority<\/li><li>The ability to handle adversity well<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>There are other issues that also factor in this discussion.  Some of the key parts include:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Family of Origin:<\/span>  i.e. broken families, alcoholism, abuse and\/or neglect growing up, lack of support.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Immorality:<\/span>  includes pornography, addictions, self-defeating patterns in their life.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Health Issues:<\/span>  chronic illness, significant allergies, overall poor health, specialized medical needs.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mental Health:<\/span>  depression, anxiety, personality disorders, burnout.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Other Factors: <\/span>  including marital dysfunction, workaholism, isolation, a \u201cknow-it-all attitude\u201d.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Another Key Challenge is Spiritual Warfare<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">These attacks are very real.  It\u2019s possible that being Christians in the US may dull our sensitivities to the realities of spiritual warfare and attacks.  Often missionaries are being confronted by dark spiritual forces including witchcraft, demonic worship and activity, witchdoctors, persecution and oppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2003\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.feilcounselingandconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/5D1899ED-6EC2-4B13-A666-5A7875B53EC9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-310\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;\">How can we as a church body respond to these needs effectively?<\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There are a number of attitudes and actions that we can take to support these amazing workers, set them up for success in the mission field and express the love of Christ to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Some key elements to provide a high level of care to missionaries include:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Accept them as normal people<\/strong> <\/span>&#8211; including being needy, lonely, and going through the same life challenges we all go through. This means we don&#8217;t put them on a &#8220;spiritual pedestal&#8221; but rather just reach out to them as people like us.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Though they are normal people,<\/span> <\/strong>they often find themselves in incredibly challenging situations.  Studies have shown that missionaries daily life is <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">on average 3 times more<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">stressful<\/span> <\/strong>than our life in the US, including factors like language, culture, poverty, political and economic challenges, health care concerns, etc.  We need to respect them for this, and be <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">committed to pray and support them<\/span><\/strong>.  Let them talk about their experiences in a confidential and non-judgmental way, even it it&#8217;s way outside of an American Christian&#8217;s normal life.  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Member Care <\/span><\/strong>&#8211; Loving on them in practical ways to show our love and care for them, goes a long way in helping build trust with them and reminds them that they are not alone or forgotten.  It also provides encouragement and support.  <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Some practical ways can include:<\/span><\/strong>  financial support, gifts, favorite foods, good books, getaways.  Ask them what they both need and want, and seek as a church to provide these things for them!  Missionaries can also benefit greatly by providing them the resources to see a skilled counselor who understands missions and missionary life firsthand &amp; knows how to best help them become resilient &amp; effective long term.  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When missionaries are hurting for any number of reasons, it&#8217;s important to be <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">supportive<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">available, non-judgmental and work proactively to meet their areas of need<\/span>.<\/strong>  The goal is always to help raise them up, so that they are able to return to their ministries even more effectively than before.
